John Gaze (1947 - 2011)
I first met John in the 1970's at one of the monthly Icon auctions in Sothebys. He had, as usual, nodded off just as the most awful lot in the sale was about to be knocked down unsold. I nudged him and his hand shot into the air and he became the proud purchaser to great applause from the spectators and staff. After that we became firm friends and eventually partners in a small shop in the Chenil Galleries a new antique market in the Kings Road, later moving on to a shop in the Piccadilly Arcade. Sadly his kidnapping made him afraid of being alone at home, so much of his time was spent at the Carlton Club, where his legendary sixty cigarettes and a bottle of whisky a day, led eventually to his endless health problems and his death on the 31st July 2011 , a few days after his sixty-fourth birthday.
